Our Mission
As an affiliate of IDE International, IDE-Bangladesh seeks to realize the same broad goals and follow the same general strategies as other IDE affiliates around the world.

As a Bangladesh-based organization, IDE-B will focus on helping Bangladesh alleviate poverty and achieve its Millennium Development Goals by:

Integrating the rural poor and smallholders in particular into market systems;

Expanding access to safe drinking water and sanitation, and

Developing new methods and technologies that help smallholders raise their income.

In order to alleviate poverty through market integration and to expand access to clean water and sanitation, IDE-B will become:

The premier agency for facilitating the provision of services to small rural businesses;

The top developer of affordable technology for the rural poor, and

A premier creator of development models for rural poverty alleviation.

Our Result

Looking Back
Since its inception nearly two decades ago, IDE-B has had tremendous success in improving the lives of the poor in rural Bangladesh. Independent assessments estimate that each dollar spent by IDE-B has resulted in $50 of additional income for small farmers . Successes have come in all areas of IDE-B's programming and include:

Pro-Poor Markets
The facilitation of a private sector network for manufacturing, distributing, installing, and servicing treadle pumps with 72 manufacturers, 1205 pump dealers and 4000 well drillers;

Agriculture
The sale, through this private network, of 1.3 million treadle pumps and 200,000 hand-operate rower pumps, each of which is estimated to generate an average of $100 in additional annual income for small farmers ;

Clean Water
The installation of 1,352 "Jibon" water pumps that provide safe water to about 10,000 people in areas with deep water tables, and

The screening and marking of tube wells in 1185 villages for arsenic contamination;

The implementation of an awareness campaign that explained the dangers of arsenic to about 1 million people.

Future Goals

Between today and 2008, IDE-B will build on its past achievements by:

Raising one million smallholders' income to at least $200 per year by emphasizing on-farm productivity, and
Providing access to safe drinking water to one million rural families.
